Eligibility

Referrals to the Loretta Bartlett Home for Youth are received from Western Health Youth Corrections Division. The youth at the Home are sentenced to a period of open custody by the Youth Court and or the Director of Youth Corrections can have a young person placed on an Order To Reside Designation

General Program Description

The Loretta Bartlett HomeThe Loretta Bartlett Home for Youth is a co-ed six bed facility for young offenders. While serving their sentences in a supportive, non institutional environment our youth are encouraged to access educational programs, psychological, medical and other professional services that are available within the community. Staff at our facility provides guidance and support in helping our young people become independent and responsible individuals. It is our goal that youth under our care will acquire the skills to enable them to become positive role models within the community and be successful in future endeavours. This is accomplished in part through education, employment, volunteer work, job skills programs and life and social skills training.

Community /Volunteer Resouces

The Loretta Bartlett Home for Youth maintains close relationships with many community partners with an ongoing commitment to youth, restorative justice, education and employment. These resources include Western Health, Department of Justice, YMCA (Youth Services, Fitness Centre, Helping Youth Prepare for Employment Program), Community Youth Network, Western School District, Employment Preparation Program, Human Resources Labour and Employment, Salvation Army Thrift Store, Mount Patricia Cemetery Association and the Community Mental Health Initiative and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

We have an active Program Committee made up of Community Volunteers from the YMCA, our local Junior High School, RNC and the Canadian Paraplegic Association.

Staff Resources

Our facility has two staff on duty on a 24 hour basis. The staff compliment is:

  • Coordinator
  • Senior Counsellor
  • 7 permanent Counsellors
  • Relief Counsellors

We have ongoing support from a West Coast Regional Director (John Howard Society NL. Inc.) and Liaison Social Worker sponsored by Western Health.
