Community Support Worker, New Day Program (St. John’s)

Full-time Temporary until March 31st, 2026 or until the incumbent returns.
Summary:
Under the supervision of Learning Resources Manager, the Community Support Worker will provide community supports for participants who have been identified as having complex mental health needs. The Community Support Worker will work in collaboration with program manager and case managers to provide direct support to participants to attain the skills needed for independent living such as: life skills, education, employment, transportation, maintaining housing and crisis intervention/prevention.
Responsibilities:
- Build rapport and provide daily support and services to participants to help them with an enhanced sense of well-being and increased independence.
- Collaborate with the Case Manager to ensure that individual support plans are implemented.
- Maintains collaboration with John Howard Society programs; and partnering agencies for the purpose of case management, alternative program referral and client advocacy.
- Effectively model and assist participants in their development of physical, social, emotional, and life skills such as maintaining personal hygiene, assisting with housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, budgeting, making and keeping appointments, and interpersonal skills.
- Engages with landlords to help develop additional suitable affordable housing
- Maintains accurate electronic and manual client records and a process for statistical data collection.
- Develops and presents information sessions to clients and community agencies where needed.
- Attends program related meetings as required.
- Provides transportation to clients as required.
- Engages in professional development as required.
- Ensures confidentiality guidelines are met regarding staff and client information.
- Shares Responsibility for maintaining a safe, secure environment for both staff and participants,
- Performs other related duties as required by the Manager of the Learning Resources Coordinator and Case Management team.
Qualifications:
- University degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling Psychology or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of mental health and addictions.
- Experience working with a person centered and trauma informed approach
- Demonstrated knowledge of and a minimum of 1-year experience working with individuals involved in the Criminal Justice System.
- Experience with and a demonstrated understanding of vulnerable populations.
- Broad understanding of the criminal justice system.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Proven competency in computer software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Multilingual skills and multicultural competence are an asset.
- First Aid/MHFA/ASIST Certifications are an asset.
- Certificate of conduct is required.

Salary: $32.04 /hour as per collective agreement CUPE 4864; 35 hours per week.
