The Loretta Bartlett Home for Youth (LBHY) is a gender diverse six bed residential facility located in Corner Brook, NL that provides evidenced based interventions in efforts to achieve the best possible outcomes in crime prevention, reduction, and rehabilitation for our youth. All referrals to the LBHY come from the Department of Children, Seniors, and Social Development (CSSD).
The counselling team at the LBHY fosters a supportive homelike therapeutic environment that encourages the development of critical skills in areas such as relationships, communication, positive coping, education, and employment. Day-to-day structured programming is facilitated using a strength-based approach and utilizes positive mentoring grounded in mutual respect, care, and trust to promote independence, responsibility, and other prosocial outcomes. Our youth are also encouraged to utilize mental health, addictions, and educational services offered by our community partners.
Summary:
Under the supervision of the Coordinator, a Group Home Counsellor provides counselling, supervision, and a wide variety of related services to youth in a residential environment.
Responsibilities:
- Provides supervision of residents and monitors their activities within and outside the home.
- Records resident activity in a daily log, communication log and incident reports if required.
- Prepare behavioral reports for court as required and discharge summaries upon their release.
- Conducts and documents regular checks on residents and the physical facility.
- Identifies problem areas and intervenes effectively in crisis situations.
- Provides informal/supportive counselling to residents.
- Completes intake requirement for new residents.
- Attends program related meetings.
- Prepares meals as required and completes regular household duties.
- Transport residents to appointments, school, meetings etc.
- Complete residential purchases.
- Provides access to medication and documents as required.
- Communicates with staff and volunteers through the use of the daily log, communication log and shift change briefings.
- Contributes to the maintenance of a clean and safe facility.
- Contributes to the orientation/training of staff/interns/volunteers.
- Engages in professional development as required.
- Ensures confidentiality guidelines are met regarding staff and client information.
- Shares responsibility for maintaining a safe, secure environment for both staff and clients.
Qualifications:
- University degree in Social Work, Criminology or the social sciences (psychology, sociology or education).
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience delivering supportive counselling in both individual and group settings.
- Experience with and a demonstrated understanding of the offender population.
- Broad understanding of the criminal justice system.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proven competency in computer software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Certificate of conduct.
- Enhanced reliability check as required.

Salary: $27.07 starting salary with shift differential evenings and weekends as per collective agreement.
