Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor ( St. John’s)

Summary:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor (Non-residential) delivers evidence-based programming, provides individual counselling to participants, and assists with clinical consultation for team members. The fundamental objective of this position is to provide person centered and trauma informed service to participants for the purpose of fostering improved wellness, reducing barriers, and reducing the risk for recidivism.
Responsibilities:
- Delivers evidence-based programs in a group and/or individual settings, in the community and institutions.
- Provides individual mental health counselling to participants when required
- Provides guidance and ongoing clinical consultation support to staff for the purpose of fostering adherence to professional standards
- Where applicable, provides staff with relevant training from a clinical perspective
- Completes file reviews, assessments and reports as required.
- Participates in the organization and delivery of programs.
- Attends program related meetings
- Collaboration and consultation with John Howard Society programs and partner agencies for the purpose of case management, appropriate program referrals, and participant advocacy.
- Implementation of best practices and evidence based modalities
- Contributes to the orientation/training of staff/interns/volunteers.
- Contributes to an environment that fosters positive mental health for participants through ongoing assessment of program standards, program content, and utilization of a trauma informed and person centered approach.
- Completing documentation in accordance with professional standard of practice
- Maintains statistical data collection
- Development and presentation of information sessions for participants and community agencies.
- Assists with research and implementation of evidence based practices and approaches for ongoing program delivery
- Engages in professional development as required.
- Adheres to confidentiality protocol
- Performs other related duties as required by the manager
Qualifications:
- Completion of (or candidate for) Master’s degree in Social Work or Psychology.
- Eligibility for registration with a professional body (NLASW or CCPA).
- Knowledge of clinical practice and standards as per professional body.
- Knowledge/ experience of DBT (asset).
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience providing service to individuals with complex needs.
- Critical thinker.
- Experienced and skilled in group engagement and facilitation.
- Experience with and a demonstrated understanding of the offender population.
- Broad understanding of the criminal justice system.
- Person centered and trauma informed approach.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Exceptional ability to engage and build relationships with participants.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to be flexible, take initiative, work independently, and work collaboratively with a team.
- Multilingual skills and multicultural competence are an asset.
- Certificate of conduct and vulnerable record check.
- Exceptional time management and prioritization skills.
- Enhanced reliability check.

Salary: $36.06/hour as per collective agreement; 21 hours per week.
